But do you know why cartoon characters usually only have 4 fingers?
I'm sure you've noticed that many famous cartoon characters only have 4 fingers. The best-known example is The Simpsons. But have you ever wondered why that is? There are several reasons. For one thing, drawing four fingers is much easier than putting a complete hand on paper. What is true for animated cartoon figures should be negligible for cartoon comic figures, right? After all, it would hardly be an effort for a comic artist to draw one more finger.
In fact, the tradition of the "4 fingers" goes back to the cartoons of the 1920s and 1930s. It was then that the cartoons were still elaborately drawn and animated by hand. To save time, the animators, mainly Disney, started drawing fewer fingers. But that's not a bad thing at all, because all the gestures you need can be done with your thumb, index finger and two other fingers.
Which finger do you think was left out?
Guess which finger was left out to save time? The popular cartoon characters did not only serve as role models for children. They are popular and everyone knows them. Surely it would not be morally appropriate for Mickey Mouse or any other Disney character to suddenly make obscene gestures. In fact, there are now cartoon characters who can be expected to make such gestures, but it also depends a little on the overall image of the comic or cartoon. A character that looks rather sketchy, simple and somehow knobbly will hardly have a delicate and anatomically correct hand. It just doesn't go together.
But there are also famous cartoon characters who definitely have five fingers. Especially in comics, which are drawn more elaborately and in greater detail, characters with five fingers appear more often. Just look at them. In Asterix and Obelix and Tintin, the figures have the right number of fingers. You probably haven't noticed that yet, have you? And something else you've probably never noticed before: In the old Disney films in particular, the cartoon characters have no fingernails.
